Pre-Employment : A company can make passing a drug test a condition of employment. With this approach, all applicants will receive drug testing prior to being hired.
Random : Tests using an unpredictable selection process are the most effective for deterring illicit drug use. Everyone within a pool or roster must have an equal chance of being selected and tested in each selection period (i.e Monthly, Bi-monthly, Quarterly, etc).
Post-Accident : Employees who were involved in a workplace accident or unsafe practices can help determine whether alcohol or other drug use was a contributing factor to the incident.
Reasonable Suspicion or Cause : Clients may decide to test employees who show discernible signs of being unfit for duty (for-cause testing), or who have a documented pattern of unsafe work behavior (reasonable suspicion testing.) These kinds of tests help to protect the safety and wellbeing of the employee and other coworkers.
Return to Duty : This test is the first of a series of tests used when an employee tests positive under DOT regulations. After completing the SAP process, if test is negative, the employee will complete the next test in the process. If test is positive, the employee will have a new violation and will be required to complete another return to duty process.
Follow-up : This is the next test required in the Return to Duty process after the initial return to duty test has been completed with negative results. If test is negative, the employee will be allowed to start working again. If test is positive, the employee will have a new violation and will be required to complete another return to duty process.
Periodic Medical : Typically performed on current employees at consistent time periods throughout the year. Many companies choose to perform annual periodic testing – especially if employees are required to undergo an annual physical.
Diversion : Typically related to healthcare providers when prescription drugs are used illegally.
Promotion : Employee is promoted to a new position.
Transfer : Employee is transfers to a new position or company. For example, if a company merges with another.
Other : Generic reason, but must include explanation filled in.
