Different Possible Result Types

Negative : No evidence of drug or drug metabolites use or misuse was detected in the urine sample.

Positive : One (or more) drug or drug metabolites were found in amounts that suggest drug use or misuse.

Positive (UTCD : Unable to Contact Donor) : One (or more) drug or drug metabolites were found in amounts that suggest drug use or misuse. Medical Review Office (MRO) were unable to reach the applicant within a specific amount of time. To have results amended have the applicant contact the MRO at 888-382-2281.

Dilute : A “dilute specimen” means that the concentration of drug or drug metabolites in the specimen are “diluted”. A dilute specimen typically occurs when a sample has an abnormal level of creatinine in it. Normal levels have been determined to be between 0.02 - 0.05 ng/ml. Abnormally high or low concentrations of creatinine in the urine would be caused by a few different situations:

  • The applicant drank a lot of water before going to take the test (most common)

  • The specimen was altered in some way

  • The applicant has a medical issue

  • The applicant’s body has normally higher or lower amounts of creatinine

Lost in Transit : The specimen was collected at the clinic but never made it to the lab due to shipping or clinic discrepancies and errors. It is impossible to know if the error was made by the clinic or the mail carrier. Lost in transit specimens occur in less than 1% of all drug testing programs. If a re-test is requested, our team will try to reschedule the applicant at a different clinic to avoid this problem from occurring again, as this may be the clinic’s fault and not a shipping problem.

Refusal to Test : What took place at the clinic is closely meets the following criteria: Donor submitted a sample to the lab that is out of temp range, is insufficient, or is incorrect in some other way. The temperature range for a urine collection is 103º to 96º. The specimen needs to stay at this temp for 3 minutes after specimen is provided to clinic staff.

The clinic’s procedure is to allow the applicant to get a drink of water and sit (usually observed as much as possible) for up to 1 hour after the first sample. The applicant is then allowed submit a second specimen. If the donor walks out in that amount of time, the test is cancelled and dispatched as a refusal.

Specimen ID Missing or Mismatch : The specimen has been received at the lab with a mismatched or missing specimen ID. The specimen was collected at the clinic, but due to clinic discrepancies/errors as it arrived at the lab the specimen ID on the cup did not match the chain of custody or the chain of custody was missing. Mismatched specimens occur in less than 1% of all drug testing programs. If a re-test is requested, our team will try to reschedule the applicant at a different clinic to avoid this problem from occurring again, as this may be the clinic’s fault and not a shipping problem.

Abnormal pH : An extremely high or low pH can be an indication of tampering with a sample or adulteration. Urine pH values typically fall between 4.5 and 9.0
